Coyote Creek Bikeway: RTC Travels to SoCal to Talk Trails
In late-March, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's Western Regional Office participated in a series of public meetings for the proposed 5 mile extension of the 13.5 mile Coyote Creek Bikeway, which runs through Los Angeles County and ends at Seal Beach (too many to list). Upon completion, this trail will eventually connect communities in Orange and Los Angeles Counties to a 50-mile network of bicycle paths. The trail extension project, which is being led by Trails4All, represents the opportunity to build on the region's success of developing trails within watersheds. Bikeways already exist along the Los Angeles River, San Gabriel River, the lower segment of the Coyote Creek and a number of other local watersheds.
In the public meetings, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) staff spoke with residents about the benefits the trail extension could bring to their communities. The Coyote Creek passes a number of schools, public parks and shopping centers, and the proposed trail would make several nearby communities more walkable and bikeable. RTC also helped address concerns voiced by community members that crime and vandalism may increase with the additional trail network. In fact, statistics show that trails consistently have a positive impact on crime and vandalism; and sharing these figures with community members helped assuage their concerns.
